Mosquito season begins slowly in the spring, peaks in the summer, and tapers off in the fall…

But, depending on where you live, it might seem like mosquito season lasts all year long. And yes, in some states, this may be true. No matter where you live, though, mosquitoes are frustrating. So, the best way to avoid these pests and their itchy bites is to know when they’re most active in your state so you can help defend yourself!

The Perfect Conditions

Mosquitoes thrive under certain conditions, and these conditions can typically help us determine when we will expect to see them. Typically, mosquitoes become most active in temperatures above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Although, they prefer temperatures above 70 degrees Fahrenheit to truly thrive. Plus, mosquitoes tend to prefer hot, humid environments (our southern states know that!). Warm areas with heavy rainfall may see increased mosquito populations and activity, too, as these are prime breeding conditions.

When does your mosquito season start?

Mosquito season can begin as early as February in the hottest parts of the country or as late as May in the coldest. At MOSQUITOMAX™, we like to divide up the mosquito seasons into five zones. But keep in mind, your mosquito season may begin sooner or later depending on that year’s climate and conditions.

Zone 1: February

Not surprisingly, this region’s warm, humid and wet climate means a lengthy mosquito season. In addition to Florida and Hawaii, this region also includes the second half of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Zone 2: March

Consisting of most of the United States, this region typically experiences colder temperatures, which may not be as attractive to mosquitoes. States in these areas include the rest of Texas, and the adjacent states of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, New Mexico, Arizona and the southern parts of California, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Zone 3: Early April

The cooler temperatures in these regions mean they experience some of the shortest mosquito seasons in the country. This zone stretches across the top of California, and includes Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, and most of Virginia, West Virginia, and Missouri, the lower half of Illinois and Indiana, the southernmost parts of Ohio, and the northernmost parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Zone 4: Late April

This region includes the southern two-thirds of Oregon, Wyoming and Iowa, the lower half of Idaho, most of Nebraska, the northern half of Illinois and Indiana, central and northern parts of Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C., all but the northernmost parts of Connecticut and Rhode Island, and the rest of West Virginia and Virginia, and the most southern parts of South Dakota, Michigan and New York.

Zone 5: May

Brrr… it’s cold! This zone stretches across the top of the U.S., encompassing all the states and parts of states not already mentioned, including Washington, Montana, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and the northernmost part of Oregon, the top half of Idaho, North Dakota and most of South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the rest of Michigan, New York, and Connecticut.
