Easily transform your patio into a harvest-inspired haven.

Believe it or not, Autumn is not JUST about Pumpkin Spice Lattes (we’ll save our PSL obsession for another post). It’s also a great time of year to have a lot of fun in an outdoor living space with your loved ones or relax in your own cozy nook.

Although we are in rainy Houston, TX, there is no reason to pack up your patio furniture now that it’s the beginning of fall. Turn your porch, deck, patio, or yard into a welcoming hangout and continue to enjoy the outdoors. Plus – this is a fantastic time of year to pick up patio furniture, grills, and other outdoor goodies for a steal!

Here are some quick and easy ways to make your outdoor living space into a Fall friendly retreat.

Decorate Your Outdoor Space

Add a little spice to your backyard with some string lights or lanterns! If you prefer a clean finish, hang them parallel to each other, tightly securing them over your deck or patio. For a more relaxed look, drape them on tree branches or hang them on the fence. The glow of shining lights adds warmth and a little bit of ‘oomph’ even on the chilliest of evenings. You can even add planters, wreaths or garlands for some soothing greenery. Decorative fall pumpkins, and of course, PUMPKINS make for the perfect festive space, too!

Find Comfort with Fire

No fall evening is complete without a comforting fireside spot to keep the chill at bay. There is something so nostalgic and comforting about circling up around a warm campfire during the fall season! Grab some marshmallows and a delicious cup of hot chocolate and get ready for the perfect autumn night.

Take a Leaf of Faith

Pile them up, and then jump in – it’s still as fun as ever! But after the fun, don’t rake your fall leaves to the curb. Leaves can have multiple uses in the yard and garden. They can even become decorations for your home. Did you know that fallen leaves can actually provide rich nutrients to your lawn or garden? Use them as part of your mulch or even shred them up to spread over your plants and grass.

Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall

It’s time to say goodbye to your pool floaties and lawn chairs and hello to fluffy blankets and decorative pillows! For all your summer items that you will not be using over the next several months, we’ve found it’s best to store them in a stylish storage box. You can find several great ones on Amazon! Most storage boxes are weather resistant and make for a great option to store items from rain or sun. Plus, it makes our outdoor space neat and tidy!

Prevent Your Yard from Mosquitos

Great weather and cool (as cool as Houston can get) autumn nights brings only one downside: the pests. Nothing can ruin a patio party like the nagging buzz of mosquitoes. If you plan on entertaining outdoors this fall, fear not! We have just the solution:

Drain excess water from your landscape – mosquitos love to congregate around still water so try to cover up pools, dry out puddles and clean up any still water. Mosquitos can breed in the smallest amounts of water so remember to bring in your water cups at the end of the night, too!

Use mosquito repelling plants in your yard – Some great options are basil, catnip, citronella and mint! Grow plants like this in areas where you have seen a lot of mosquitos. Stick some near your windowsill, too, to keep them out of the kitchen.

Use essential oils – Essential oils work the same if not better than your common spray mosquito repellant. Try putting essential oils near doorways and windowsills to keep them from coming indoors. The great thing about essential oils is you can even put it on your skin!

Keep your yard tidy – Mosquitos love to assemble near yard debris and dead plants so keeping your yard cleaned up and tidy is essential! We know pulling weeds can be a drag, but we promise it will be worth it.

Mow your lawn – This is a BIG one! Mosquitos love to hide out in overgrown grass, so as you’re pulling those weeds, mow your grass, too.

Use insect lights – We all know insects love to be near the light. So, instead of using traditional light bulbs in your backyard, consider using insect lights, which are specifically made to keep the bugs away.

Enjoy a Night at the Cinema in Your Own Backyard

One of the best ways to bond with your friends and family is by putting on an outdoor movie in your own backyard! Prep your backyard first by trimming back grass and plants (this will help keep pests like mosquitos from ruining your movie night).  You’ll need a projector that can display a film from your media device as well as the right cords and extension cords to hook it up. For your movie screen, you can project the film onto the side of your house, fence or a white sheet!

Set up a table near your movie-viewing area and provide finger foods and the classic movie-watching snacks, such as popcorn and candy. Or, you can even get your firepit going for some yummy s’mores. Oh, and make sure to turn on those twinkling lights. Pick your film and it’s lights, camera, action from there!
