Technical advisor to the American Mosquito Control Association, Joe Conlon admits, “There’s a tremendous amount of research being conducted on what compounds and odors people exude that might be attractive to mosquitoes”.

Scientists are looking into at least 400 different compounds that could be the key. Body chemistry and genetics could also account for 85% of mosquito vulnerability.

Leaks

A leaky system will reduce the effectiveness of repelling existing mosquitoes. Some systems will shut down automatically when a leak is recognized. No matter the manufacturer, Mosquito Max will repair leaks to any mosquito misting system.

Recognizing a Leaky System:

• The pressure gauge will read lower numbers than normal. (The gauge should read at least 150 psi but not more than 240 psi)
• Some of your nozzles spray but in decreasing volume as your line continues

Think you have an electronic failure?

• Make sure your electrical outlet has power by plugging in another electrical device that you know works.  If not, try resetting your GFCI or circuit breaker.
• Make sure your tank is full or the water supply for a tankless system is turned on.  Most misting systems have fluid level switches that tell the motor not to run when fluid levels are low.

Pumps and motors

A failing motor or pump will result in little to no mist from your mosquito misting system.  Be sure your pump tubing is fully inserted and tightened, and that your suction filter is not clogged.

Two signs your pump or motor may need repair:

• The system is noisier than normal
• You can hear the system run, but the nozzles don’t spray and the system isn’t leaky

It seems right out of the scenes of a movie: Cases of Dengue Fever Strike U.S. Gulf Coast Region. But it’s not.

The Houston Chronicle reports that tropical disease specialists are currently on watch for the viral disease they believe potentially poses a threat to the Gulf from Corpus Christi to South Florida.

According to the Miami Herald, after being virtually absent for 75-years, cases of Dengue Fever were reported in South Florida in the fall of 2009. And by the end of mosquito season in mid-October, 27 cases of the disease were reported in Key West.

This year, 16 new cases of Dengue Fever have been confirmed since April. With more than a month left of mosquito season, protection is the best defense. This is especially true for southern areas of the U.S. that tend to have long warm seasons.

Dengue Fever is a vector-borne disease transmitted by mosquitoes.  It’s not spread from person-to-person, and annually about 100 million cases of the disease are reported worldwide.  So far, in the case of the infected Florida residents, none of them had traveled outside of the U.S. Chief of the Dengue branch of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told the Miami Herald that the center is determining if the cases are an isolated occurrence or if the continental U.S. is again facing a dengue endemic.

While specialists work to determine the outcome of the dengue occurrences in the Gulf Coast regions, Mosquito Max recommends protecting yourself and your home. When is Mosquito Season?

While it seems like mosquito season can last all year, prime mosquito season is April through September. More than anything, mosquitoes are annoying but they can also carry a variety of diseases that are harmful to people and animals.

The 3 D’s of Mosquito Prevention

The American Mosquito Control Association suggests using the “3 D’s” to help protect yourself and loved ones during peak mosquito season: Drain. Defend. Dress.

• Drain – Mosquitoes breed in standing water, so it’s a great idea to check and maintain areas around your home with items that hold water such as old tires,  roof gutters, pet water dishes, and pool covers to name a few.

• Dress – Light colored, loose fitting clothing is an effective choice when protecting against mosquitoes.

• Defense – The three EPA approved repellents are recommended: DEET, Picaridin, Lemon or Eucalyptus Oil. Pyrethrins, the primary ingredient in mosquito misting systems is also EPA-approved.  Get more info on the 3 D’s and protecting yourself during peak mosquito season.
